From the colors to the light, the winter season of photography is very unique. Common challenges that arise among many photographers whether professional or beginners include finicky lighting, self-colored tones, and of course mother nature. Simply follow our guide on how you can make your next winter photography session meaningful and fun.

Winter Photography Tips For Shooting In Cold Weather

Winter is an especially wonderful time of year for photographers. Why? It gives photos an extra seasonal flare that can only be shown off during the winter months! Although, winter will help make your photos look gorgeous, remember that winter can be as harsh as it is beautiful, and the harsh weather can damage your gear without proper preventative care. Here is how you can take beautiful photos this winter while protecting your equipment from the cold elements.

Protecting Your Gear

Before heading outside to capture those winter photos, take the time to prepare your gear to withstand the winter weather. The intensity of the weather will vary depending on your location in the world – so prepare enough to where you feel confident and ready. Some things to protect your gear (and yourself) with can include:

  • Use a sealable plastic bag – As odd as it may sound, a plastic bag will help protect your equipment from the sudden temperature changes from going indoors to outdoors. The temperature change can cause moisture to develop and may get into the internals of the camera. A plastic bag will protect the camera from temperature changes and prevent moisture development.
  • Use a sturdy camera bag – This applies for all seasons, but especially in winter, having a good camera bag will save you from having to worry about damaging your equipment. You’ll also want to be sure it fits all your gear and anything else you usually take with you when outside.
  • Bring an air blower – An air blower will help keep your camera and other gear clear of snow and debris. Keeping the camera lens clean is highly necessary, otherwise, your photos will be obstructed by unwanted noise in the shot.

Taking Photos To The Next Level

The winter season provides an opportunity to capture some beautiful scenery. Photographers should take advantage of the opportunity they can before the season changes. For beginner photographers, this is also a great time to practice with the camera settings to get that great winter-esque photo! There are several creative ways to use the weather to take captivating photographs.

  • Create contrast with more color – A photo with fresh snow featured in it will set the stage for adding contrasting colors to your photo. Throw in subjects wearing bright colors like red or yellow and it will add some “pop” to the photo and give the viewer something to focus on.
  • Make use of negative space – Winter provides an abundance of monochrome scenes to work with. Use empty space in your photos to make your photos even more stunning! Add a subject to the foreground and let the empty space above the subject do the rest of the work. It is a minimal yet effective technique.
  • Use subjects to add scale and interest – Winter makes nature photography look much more pleasing, but adding people into the shot can add a sense of place, scale, and interest. However, if people don’t improve the composition of the image, forget about it and find another way to utilize people as subjects through the lens of your camera.
